Formative and Summative Assessments

Objective Staff will be able to increase student engagement by utilizing a variety of formative assessments.

Norms Equity of Voice Active Listening Respect for All Perspectives Safety and Confidentiality Respectful Use of Technology (today you get to use it in this workshop)

What are formative and summative assessments? If you have your cell phone with you, please take it out and be prepared to participate! Remember to not use “texting” language.

Let’s summarize Formative assessments – –Monitor student learning during the process of learning –Provides feedback during the process –Low stakes – little or no points Summative assessments – –Evaluate student learning at the end of the unit –High stakes – high point value

Time to Share We’re going to break up into groups Directions 1.Each person in the group should discuss formative assessments they use in their classes. 2.On your note taker write down the different strategies you could use. 3.Identify one strategy you will be demonstrating as a group.
