The Norwegian ”Ocean and Water” project: Introducing a holistic presentation at SoE Norway Thematic Marine and Coastal Eionet Workshop, EEA November By Olle Morten Grini, Norwegian Pollution Control Authority - SFT.

Some facts about SoE-Norway The Ministry of Environment has assigned the management of the website to the environmental authorities /directorates (with the editorial responsibility to SFT). SoE-Norway aims to give the latest information about the state and development of the environment. The service presents environmental topics in a simple and easy-to-follow way and provides access to more detailed scientific presentations.

The ”Ocean and Water” project: 2008: The Ministry of Environment commissioned us to improve the presentations at the website SoE Norway: - to give public access to all relevant information about the marine and freshwater environment.

This includes: –Presentations of integrated management planning of the seas and water resources - and the follow- up of these processes –Thematic presentations in different levels based on the DPSIR- model –relevant data sets covering sea areas, rivers, lakes and ground water resources –Interactive data and map presentations

The basic structure (schematic overview): Sea and Water (introduction) Biodiversity Resources Hazardous chemicals Eutrophication Radioactivity ……………. International info: WISE International reporting Level 1 SeaCoast Rivers and lakes Ground Water Level 2 Barents Sea Norwegian Sea North Sea County level Level 3 Data set on ocean and water Environmental monitoring Sea and water areas: …………. Cross topics

The thematic description will be on an aggregated level – but still holistic Thematic presentation in SoE-N, based on DPSIR Entrance Links to: - other websites - Thematic data sets Sources for more detailed information SoE-N aggregation

A map showing the three integrated management planning areas

What we are dealing with now: improving the content of the thematic presentations presentations of the indicators for the Barents Sea establishing map- services for showing water bodies and water localities. establishing a robust organisation for the management – together with our partners. establishing a version in English Status? A first version of the thematical presentations is etablished

SEIS compatibility So far it seems possible to adopt the SEIS principles (they are very similar to our national principles), but: we need more understanding of the performance of the European SoE / WISE system – and how to communcate in a network, both nationally and internationally An important question for us: how will the thematic (descriptive) information be handled at the European level ?

Norway’s contribution to part C (flexibility) We will contribute with marine and costal issues - based on our SoE Norway, as just presented - but adjusted to the SoER 2010 presentation
