★ Reading Established as the third national park in Taiwan in 1985 under the national park law, YangMingShan National Park is one of the few NPs in the world that is located nearby to a metropolitan city. YangMingShan National Park spans an area of 11,455 hectares and contains Taiwan’s largest group of volcanic formations with over twenty mountains, three hundred waterfalls, and large expanses of bamboo forest through an elevation of between 200 and 1120 meters. The volcanic formations comprise 5 main mountains. They may not look like volcanoes now, but the over twenty or so peaks that make up the national park are all naturally parts of volcanic cones or offshoots of them. Don't worry, the volcanoes are dormant (the last eruption was 300,000 years ago.)
★ Conversation Grace: I’m so boring now, what’s the next place we going to visit ? Tony: Well.We can go to the Chingteinkang to go hinking. The view is very beautiful and to breath the fresh air. Grace: Oh, sounds healthy, but I want to see more spectacles. Tony: Um… Let me think. I got it. We can go to Xiaoyukeng. There are many special creatures and hot springs. But the only defect is… it doesn’t smell good. Grace: Ok. I think I can tolerate it. Let’s go.
★ Chingteinkang ( 擎天崗 ) One of the pastures in YangMingShan National Park, and it is also the best place for on outing in YangMingShan area. In Chingteinkang, the ground looks like it was covered with a huge green blanket. Tourists will find a place to picnic, and play games easily.
★ Xiaoyukeng ( 小油坑 ) Xiaoyukeng is the best-known recreation area in YMS NP, and offers some of the most typical scenery. Located above the Datong Bridge along the YMS- Jinshan Highway, Xiaoyukeng is at an elevation of 800 meters and contains a host of volcanically-created fumaroles, sulfur crystals, hot springs, and landslides. Sulfur vents noisily spew forth gases, and hot springs discharge endless streams of boiling water. The bright yellow sulfur crystals that can be seen here are exceptionally lovely. Mt. Cising provides breathtaking views in all directions.
★ Lengshuikeng The meaning of "Lengshuikeng" in Chinese is "a cool water pit". It is because the temperature of the hot springs in the Lengshuikeng area is about 40 degrees Centigrade, quite lower than the usual hot springs (90 degrees Centigrade). Here there is a unique bowl shaped steam vent that was formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. Another special hot spring called "Milk Lake" is also located here. "Milk lake" gets its name from the unusual yellow and white sulfur that colors its water
