Look at each symbol to the left. Do you recognize them? What are you being told to do? What features allow you to recognize what each means?

TEXT FEATURE VOCABULARY Title:A descriptive heading or caption, as of a chapter,section, or other part of a book. Heading: A title or caption of a page, chapter, etc. Subheading: A title or heading of a subdivision, as in a chapter, essay, or newspaper article. Bolded Words: Darker words in the text that stand out and usually define main words or ideas Italicized Words: Slanted words in the text that emphasize a word's meaning. Caption: A written explanation of a picture and is usually located under the picture. Side Bar: A box that has more information about the topic and is usually located on the side of the main text. Graphs/Charts: Visual representation of information. Table of Contents: a list of the parts of a book or document organized in the order in which the parts appear. Index: A detailed alphabetical listing of names, places, and topics along with the numbers of the pages on which they are mentioned or discussed, usually included in or constituting the back matter. Glossary: A list at the back of a book, explaining or defining difficult or unusual words and expressions used in the text.

Remember: External=A text feature that can stand on it's own without being in a chapter (table of contents, glossary, index, etc.) Internal=A text feature found within a chapter including chapter title page (pictures, captions, bolded words, etc.)

Table of Contents Found at the beginning of the book Lists the sections or chapters in the book and on what page they are found Index Found at the end of the book alphabetized list of important topics covered in the book and the page numbers on which they can be found. Can be used to quickly find specific information about a topic. Glossary Found at the end of the book alphabetical list of important words found in a book along with their definitions

Heading Tell what a section & its subheadings will be about "Hawaiian Lizards" Title Name of book or piece of writing Lizards of North America Subheading What the paragraph will be about "The Gecko"

In the example Lizards of North America - this title would include many, many lizards. Titles are most general.

In the example "Hawaiian Lizards" - this would include fewer lizards than Lizards of North America. Headings are more specific than titles.

In the example "The Gecko" - this would only include one lizard. Subheadings are most specific.

In your group, use the provided magazines to identify at least 5 different types of text features. For each feature, answer the following questions in the PS (Power Strategy) work section of your binder: 1. Which magazine AND page # was it found? 2. List the feature. 3. Describe what you can learn from that specific feature. 4. Is it internal or external?

STRATEGY GROUP ROLE DESCRIPTIONS F earless Leader  Read directions aloud at the beginning of each session. Ensures that all group members are listening and read to work.  Reminds group members that they should have binders and any other supplies/assignments ready for the day’s session. DAILY TASK MANAGER  Gathers any materials needed for the day (books, copies, etc.)  Records successful completion of the session, or writes down tasks that were not finished on the record keeping sheet. TimeKeeper  Is aware of the time available to complete the session tasks, and keeps the group moving.  Respectfully reminds group to stay focused if conversations and actions become sidetracked. Clean UP Crew  Make sure the binder is in order as it was when you entered the room.  Take any supplies back to the middle table.  If any computers or cd players were used, return them to the correct place, and ensure they are put away in an orderly fashion (Headphones should be wrapped up and returned if used) ALL GROUP MEMBERS  Are fair and considerate to fellow group member’s perspectives. Will not dictate or ‘boss’ other group members around.  Responsible for their own work for most session assignments.  Clean up their own supplies and work areas (straighten desks, do not leave anything behind, etc.)
