What are we going to learn today?? Content- –Students will be able to define basic terms related to geography, tell how to use a map to locate themselves, and differentiate between physical and human geography

What is Geography?  The study of all the aspects of the earth.  Physical Mountains, Lakes, Oceans etc.  Human People, Environmental Impact, Cultures etc.  Mere names of places...are not geography...Geography has higher aims than this: it seeks to classify phenomena [natural and political], to compare, to generalize, to ascend from effects to causes, and, in doing so, to trace out the great laws of nature and to mark their influences upon man....In a word Geography is a Science–a thing not of mere names but of argument and reason, of cause and effect.

Physical Geography The study of the physical aspects of the Earth. –Landforms, Oceans –Animals, Ecosystems –Natural Resources

Human Geography  Explores the people and cultures of the world and their impacts on it.  Culture  Political systems  Social systems  Economic systems  Characteristics of various peoples Food Religion Movement

Where am I?? Spatial Analysis- –locating your space and evaluating it in relation to someplace else –In other words finding your way between 2 places
