Chapter 10 Getting Technical

Goals Expand your skills with the 3D Effects options Understand the process for mapping art to 3D surfaces Use the Perspective tool to create 3D objects and scenes Learn the ins and outs of developing charts and graphs, and how to customize them Explore the many ways that patterns are created and applied

Uses for 3D and Perspective Effects More realistic illustrations 3D graphics Prototypes for 3D product and packaging design Interior design layouts More realistic architectural graphics

About 3D and Perspective Objects The color of a 3D object depends on the stroke and fill color. To add graphics to a 3D object, you must make it into a symbol first. Edit an effect using the Appearance panel. Use the Plane Switching widget to determine the position of objects. When editing a symbol, don’t move it on the Artboard—just make the changes in color, style, line weight, etc.

About Creating Graphs Collect and organize data first. Keep the graph grouped as long as possible so it remains editable. Create graphics to add more visual interest to bar charts. Add text to the labels so that people understand what they are looking at. Play with 3D options to add dimension.

About Creating Patterns Keep the final use of the pattern in mind as you design it. Consider the size and shape of the tile that you want to use. Experiment with spacing between tile graphic elements. Edit a pattern by double-clicking it in the Swatches panel. Save custom patterns as libraries for use in other projects.

Summary Working in three dimensions takes some time and patience. Using 3D effects can “spice” up ordinary graphics. Creating patterns is much easier, and has more options, in CS6 than in any previous version of Illustrator.
