Warm Up 3/8 Only write the information in the green box. Then answer it and explain WHY. Sustainability is the ability to maintain life over a long period of time NOT to live longer. The low biodiversity environment shown below could support life for thousands of years if there is not a disturbance. How would a disturbance, such as a forest fire, affect the sustainability of this forest ecosystem? WHY?

More biodiverse environments enable higher sustainability when there is a stress factor (disturbance) because there are multiple other food sources available to make up for the depleted or lower availability of resources (producers and consumers). Desert Food Web Rain Forest Food Web Low Biodiversity Low Sustainability High Biodiversity High Sustainability

Claim – The answer in a complete sentence. – DO NOT use “because” here. Only put your answer. Ex: Community ___ is the most sustainable. Evidence (Proof)– What do you SEE that supports your answer? – Identify the specific evidence you see that supports your answer. Use quantitative data: (Ex: compare the number of different species in the communities at each level.) – Do NOT include any reasoning or “I know this because….” type of statements Reasoning- Explanation of evidence ALL THREE questions – Answer ALL THREE (3) questions in complete sentences to give a description explanation (reason) as to why your above claim is true. Use the provided words anywhere in your reasoning 1.Explain the relationship between biodiversity and sustainability. 2.Discuss how the number of organisms supports the community’s sustainability. 3.Give an example that predicts how a disturbance or natural disaster will affect biodiversity/sustainability Biodiversity PBA TURN IN: On front desk end of period
