Chapitre 5 notes #3 Direct object pronouns “Le, Les”

Révision In a sentence, a direct object directly receives the action of the verb. The direct object answers the question “who” or “what”. You have already learned the direct object pronouns for 1 st and 2 nd person. They are: MeNous TeVous Ex: He sees me (here “me” is receiving the seeing, so “me” is the direct object.

Direct object pronouns in the 3 rd person The 3 rd person direct object pronouns replaces people or things. They are: Le (him/it) masculine singular La (her/it) feminine singular L’ (him/her/it) before a vowel Les (they) plural

Placement Just like with “me”, “te”, “nous”, “vous”, “le”, “la”, “l’ ”, “les” come right before the verb of which they are the object. This goes for positive and negative sentences and inversion questions. Ex: Est-ce que tu regardes le match? Oui, je le regarde. (Are you watching the game? Yes, I’m watching it) Here, le (it) replaces “the match”.

Exception IF the sentence has an infinitive after the conjugated verb, the pronoun goes before the infinitive, not the conjugated verb. Ex: Est-ce que tu vois Sophie? Oui, je la vois devant la télé. Ex: Est-ce que tu peux voir Sophie? Oui, je peux la voir devant la télé.

Practiquons! Please replace the underlined nouns with pronouns: 1) J’adore mes étudiants Je les adore 2) Nous lisons la bande dessinée Nous la lisons 3) Ils aiment le film Ils l’aiment
