Health – Past and Present Health is the combination of your physical, mental, emotional, social, environmental, occupational and spiritual well being. Most people in the 1900’s died of what? Infectious Diseases Most people today die of what? Lifestyle Diseases

Leading Causes of DEATH! Ages 15 – 24? 1. Car Accidents 2. Homicide 3. Suicide All ages combined? 1. Heart Disease 2. Cancer 3. Strokes

Health Risk Factors Risk Factor – anything that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other health problems. Ex. Heart Disease due to the lack of physical activity, high fat diet, stress, smoking

Controllable Risk Factors Risk factors that you can control or do something about. Working out to prevent heart disease Not smoking, drinking or doing drugs Wearing your seat belt Making well thought out decisions

Uncontrollable Risk Factors Risk factors that cannot be changed. Age Race Gender Heredity Envioronment

Six Health Risk Behaviors Sedentary Lifestyle Alcohol and other drug use Sexual Activity Behaviors that cause injuries Tobacco use Poor Eating Habits

6 Components of Health Physical – The way your body functions Eating right, exercising, medical check-ups, avoiding drugs and alcohol Mental – the ability to recognize reality and cope with the demands of life Mental illness, self-esteem, phobias, stress, responsibilities, expectations Social – the quality of your relationships with people around you Friends, family, treating others with respect

6 Components Continued Emotional – expressing your emotions in a healthy, positive way Coping with unpleasant emotions, anger, sadness, hostility, not hurting others physically or verbally Spiritual – maintaining harmonious relationships with other living things and having spiritual direction Religions, values, peace of mind, Environmental – keeping your air and water clean, food safe, land enjoyable and safe Recycling, reducing and reusing

The Range of Health Wellness Behavior Risk Behavior Risk Behavior Premature Death Optimum Health Wellness Continuum – the scale that shows a range from excellent health (long life expectancy) to poor health (premature death)

Life Expectancy Life Expectancy – the average number of years a group of people is expected to live. Some factors that determine that include: gender, heredity, environment, culture, access to medical care, and basic health habits

Who Influences your Health? Heredity – the traits you inherit from your parents. Eye color, hair color, body type, height Peers/Social – people of the same age who share similar interests. Loyal and supportive friendships, pressure into illegal behaviors Culture/Family – beliefs, values and practices shared by people with common backgrounds Religion, language, traditions YOURSELF (attitude, determination, focus)

Society and Health Problems Medical Advancements Insulin pumps Technology Computers, lasers, better products, healthier people Public Policy Regulations (tobacco, alcohol) Education Health education

Promotion of Health Issues 1. Advocate – Speak out or argue in favor of something you believe in 2. Volunteer at a health clinic or public agency 3. Train to be in a health related career 4. Public Service announcements – messages created to educate people about an issue

Question Of The Day? Why should teenagers care so much about their health at such a young age? The habits that you form as a teenager, 99% of the time WILL BE the habits that you will have for the rest of your life. These habits as well will most likely be passed down to younger siblings or your own children in the future.

Taking Charge!! There are 3 ways to take complete and total control over your own wellness 1. Knowledge 2. Lifestyle 3. Attitude

How To Avoid Risks Abstinence Avoiding harmful behaviors completely Examples: avoiding numbers 1-3 and 5-6 while being care with #4 from the last slide. Abstinence Benefits Drugs - No brain damage from drug use, no internal body damage, no negative psychological effects Sexual Activity - No worry about pregnancy, no STD’s, no emotional problems or humiliation
