Who does it impact? Whitney Lyn MD Faculty Development Project

Objectives 1. Discuss 3 subtopics of professionalism 2. Give examples and interactive groups of how these 3 subtopics apply to professionalism 3. Show how lack of professionalism can effect other people

Definition The conduct, aims and qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person

Topics of all Professionals  Professional Attire  Attitude  Behavior  Vocabulary  Mind-Set  Obstacles  Promptness  Communication  Finishing Assigned Tasks

 Then break up into groups and discuss the various scenarios and then we review with the class

Data  Multiple studies showed that unprofessional behavior in medical school is predictive not only of problems during residency but also of later disciplinary action against the practicing physician by state medical boards, it is the obligation of the medical school to the residency program and to society to identify and report these behaviors. Acad Med Oct;80(10 Suppl):S Acad Med.

Data (cont.)  Data also shows that foreign medical graduates had a higher risk of disciplinary action compared to US medical graduates Am J Med Jul;118(7) Am J Med.  Three domains of unprofessional behavior emerged that were related significantly to later disciplinary outcome: (1) poor reliability and responsibility, (2) lack of self- improvement and adaptability, and (3) poor initiative and motivation
