Issues of ICT Usage among Malaysian Secondary School English Teachers By Arumugam Raman & Abdul Halim Mohamed

Introduction - The article is written by Arumugam Raman and Abdul Halim Mohamed from School of Education and Modern Languages, UUM. - The article explored on perception, usage and obstacles of using ICT in teaching English language among secondary school English teachers. - The research is conducted at semi-urban schools in Sungai Petani, Kedah. 30 teachers from 3 schools were involved in the research.

Aim To reveal the perception, usage and obstacles faced by secondary school English teachers when using ICT in classroom

Objectives - to assess secondary school English teachers’ perception towards integrating ICT in teaching English language. - to find out the usage level of ICT among secondary school English language teachers in teaching English language. - to identify the dominancy of obstacles faced by the secondary school English language teachers in integrating ICT in teaching English language.

Type of Research - Positivist approach - Framework: Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) model - Quantitative study - Survey research, using questionnaire

Questionnaire - collect data from 30 teachers of 3 schools - questions are based on: 1. teachers’ perception towards integrating ICT in teaching English lessons 2. usage of ICT among teachers in teaching English 3. obstacles that teachers probably face in integrating ICT in the teaching process of English language * SPSS version 17.0 is used for accurate tabulation

Results - positive feedback in teachers’ perception about ICT integration, higher score compared to usage and obstacles. - the use of ICT is minimal and limited (finding information, preparing presentations using PowerPoint, reading only). - high dominancy of obstacles faced by the teachers in integrating ICT in teaching English language.

Conclusion - positive reaction on the perception about ICT integration in English teaching. - ICT is a beneficial tool, yet it is underused. - improvement on ICT skills for the teachers. - better, sufficient ICT facilities for the students.
