More to Color Theory

So, what exactly is…color? Color is reflected light. "Color itself isn't a thing we can touch, like a pencil or book; color is how our eyes understand reflection of light off of certain objects. That's why we don't see colors in the dark; there's no light to reflect.“

Color is light. Light moves in waves. Different types of waves have different lengths and speeds. When waves of light hit an object, they interact with the surface of the object and are either absorbed or reflected. The wave that is reflected, is the color we view that object to be!

How do we know, then, which colors look good together? Complimentary colors: two colors directly across from each other on the wheel; together they create a vibrant and bright look, but can be overdone Analogous colors: any three colors next to each other, often found in nature and are harmonious and pleasing to the eye

These arrangements are called “color schemes” A color scheme is a combination of colors that creates harmony and is attractive to look at. There is also another Color Scheme called “monochromatic.” Mono = one Chroma = Color. So, what do you think monochromatic means?

6 th Grade Color Theory 1.Come up with an interesting line design. The spaces between the lines will be painted in, so do not make it too intricate. 2.Create at least 2 thumbnails. 3.Choose a Color Scheme that interests you: monochromatic, analogous, warm, cool, or complimentary. 4.Sketch your final design on thick paper. 5.Place Painter’s Tape over lines. Ms. Hermann will demonstrate. 6.Paint in remaining design with your chosen Color Scheme. 7. Remove tape when dry. 8. Voila!

7 th & 8 th Grade Color Theory Project 1.Create at least 3 thumbnails of a line design. This design will be repeated throughout your final piece. 2. Your design should be drawn in a square NOT rectangle. Consider balance! 3. Transfer your design onto the final paper. 4. Each square will be painted with a different Color Scheme. -Monochromatic -Complimentary -Analogous -One of the previous schemes will be used twice, but you may choose different colors for the second time.
