"The Baltic Sea continues to be one of Europe's most vulnerable areas. Algae bloom each summer, and more and bigger ships move through its narrowest and shallowest straits. Divisions from the past are still being overcome. Research, innovation and trade links need to be reinforced, while transport and energy connections have big gaps – the eastern and northern parts of the Region are still too often isolated from the rest of the EU." The European Parliament called for a strategy to address the urgent environmental challenges facing the Baltic Sea region The European Council issued its Presidency Conclusions, inviting the European Commission to present a long term strategy for the Baltic Sea region by June 2009 The European Commission Communication presented the EUSBSR together with an Action Plan on 10 June 2009 The European Council endorsed the EUSBSR on October 2009 The European Commission published the first report on the implementation of the EUSBSR on 22 June 2011 The Report led to the European Council Conclusions on the review of the Strategy endorsed on 15 November 2011 The European Commission Communication on the review of the EUSBSR published on 23 March 2012 The General Affairs Council endorsed the Council Conclusions on the completion of the review of the EUSBSR on 26 June 2012 The European Council endorsed the Council Conclusions on 14 December 2012 encouraging to make full use of the Northern Dimension and its partnerships in the implementation o the EUSBSR The European Commission presented the reviewed Action Plan of the EUSBSR in February 2013 The evaluation of macro-regional strategies should be presented to the Council by June 2013 European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region The EUSBSR is a Member State-Led Initiative

THEN: EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region 2009 The first macro-regional strategy Organised into four thematic pillars and one horizontal section Action Plan (2009) consisted of 15 priority areas and 13 horizontal actions 4 pillars of the EUSBSR to make the Baltic Sea Region: 1.an environmentally sustainable place – 5 priority areas 2.a prosperous place – 4 priority areas 3.an accessible and attractive place – 3 priority areas 4.a safe and secure place – 3 priority areas European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region
