THE CANTERBURY TALES PROJECT A Characterization Study

WHAT IS CHARACTERIZATION?  Characterization is the process of creating characters in fiction. Characters can be presented directly or indirectly.characters  Characterization can involve developing a variety of aspects of a character, such as appearance, age, gender, educational level, vocation or occupation, financial status, marital status, social status, hobbies, religious beliefs, ambitions, motivations, etc.

 Leads the pilgrimage  Warrior  Crusader  Embodies courtly values  Belongs to the noble class THE KNIGHT FOUR GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS and HIS OR HER CLASS PICTURE CHARACTER’S NAME

“…he a worthy man, Who, from the moment that he first began To ride about the world, loved chivalry, Truth, honour, freedom and all courtesy” DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION He was worthy and rode around the world. He loved chivalry (being noble), telling the truth, acting honorably (good morals and virtues) and fought for others’ freedom and he did so in the nicest way. Direct Characterization Specific lines from the poem Translation or interpretation in your words

“Of mortal battles he had fought fifteen, and he'd fought for our faith at Tramissene three times in lists, and each time slain his foe” INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION  He fought in 15 battles; he also fought for Christianity (“our faith”) and won every battle.  This tells us that not only is he a truly courageous and skilled knight, but he is also faithful and fights for his beliefs. Indirect Characterization Specific lines from the poem Translation or interpretation in your words What this says about his character and/or personality.

 The Knight is going on the pilgrimage to see St. Thomas Beckett’s shrine in order to give thanks and praise.  His is a picture of the ideal knight and demonstrates a parallel for the characters in the lower classes. WHY? YOUR FINAL THOUGHTS AND REASONS FOR THEIR PILGRIMAGE

 Chaucer probably believed that the Knight was an ideal individual who should be honored for his humility and loyalty. Chaucer also placed him first in line for the pilgrimage to illustrate this sentiment. WHAT CHAUCER THOUGHT
