Ready for Tomorrow: Six Proven Ideas to Graduate and Prepare More Students for College and 21st-Century Careers November 2009 Southern Regional Education Board
1.Provide students in every program of study with a rigorous academic core curriculum. 2.Insist on high-quality career/technical course sequences that blend academic and technical content through challenging, authentic assignments. 3.Equip all students with 21st-century skills through high- quality career/technical programs. 4.Expect every student to strive to meet standards in academic and career/technical classrooms. 5.Guarantee students have the support needed to meet readiness standards for college, career training or both. 6.Connect every student to an adult adviser or mentor who has the time and skills to provide guidance and support.
Schools need to create a new type of guidance and advisement system — one that is based on a guidance curriculum and involves teachers, students and parents in reviewing programs of study and college and career options. Counselors, leaders and teachers need to see guidance in a new context to prepare more students for further education and productive careers.
Smaller Learning Communities Supporting large high schools to prepare all students to succeed in postsecondary education and careers without need for remediation.
