Realism Regionalism Local Color

Regionalism and Local Color Attempts to accurately represent speech, manners, habits, history, folklore and beliefs of people in specific geographical areas. Local color Truthfully imitates ordinary life and brings a particular region alive by portraying the dialects, dress, mannerisms, customs, characters types, and landscapes of that region.

Tall Tale Form of storytelling featuring outlandish characters and events, often with a comic effect Attempts to fool or impress the listener (or reader) o Hyperbole—extreme exaggeration or overstating a claim or point o Understatement—downplaying the significance of the outlandish o Local Color—brings a region alive by portraying its dress, mannerisms, customs, character types, and speech.  Dialect—distinct form of a language spoken in one geographic area or by a particular group. – In “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” Twain uses a frontier dialect.
