Inclusion in Child Care and Preschool Settings: A Framework for Success Sarah A. Mulligan Executive Director Division for Early Childhood

What are the issues you face? On the sticky notes attached to your handouts, identify three things that you feel are barriers to a child care system that is fully inclusive. WRITE BIG!

The Challenge Game!! Put your three issues on the wall according to how big of a challenge you believe this issue is in your community or state.

Inclusion requires both attitude and skill.

Quality is directly linked to inclusion.

Confidence is as important as competence.

Ask questions and listen to the answers.

Child care must be viewed in the context of the family.

Training and information must be readily available.

Content must be imbedded in existing routines.

Create a community of learners.

You have to Measure Progress.

Framework for Success Quality Practices = Quality Service = Better Outcomes

Elements for Success:  Federal System that encourages collaboration.  State System that practices collaboration.  Leaders who have vision.  Family members who have a mission.  Practitioners who have skill and intention.

Quality Practices for All Children Program Recommended Practices

What are the questions you will go home with?
