·Jazz is a genre of music that was created from African American communities of New Orleans in the United States during the late 19th and 20th centuries. ·The main characteristic of jazz is that it is based on improvisation. The most common interpretation of jazz includes a wind instrument (trumpet) accompanied by a rhythm section (drums)and harmonic instruments (piano, guitar). ·Jazz can be interpreted for soloists, trios, quartets or more musicians that sometimes are called big bands.

 The word began as West Coast slang around 1912, the meaning of which varied but did not refer to music.  The use of the word in a musical context was documented as early as 1915 in the Chicago Daily Tribune.  Its first documented use in a musical context in New Orleans was in a November 14, 1916 Times-Picayune article about “jas bands”.

 Jazz was born in the twentieth-century.  It was very different because it broke the rules, musically and socially.  Many people criticized it because they think that only European music was “good music”.

 New Orleans became the first center of jazz.  As jazz´s popularity grew, some people did campaigns to censor “the devil´s music”.  Blacks and whites began mixing socially for the first time in the Black and Tan clubs of Chicago.

·A few years later, Amiri Baraka created the “white jazz“ a music genre expressive of white skinned people. White jazz musicians appeared in the early 1920s. · Chicago School was developed by white musicians including Bud Freeman, Dave Tought, and Eddie Condon. Also Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa became leading members of big-band swing during the 1930s

·When the men were in the WWII, many big jazz bands formed by women took over. However, with the racial divisions that were at that time, there was no real band that any one society listened to. The International Sweethearts of Rhythm was a well-known group of this time formed by ladies. Women's Jazz Festival ·Dr. Billy Taylor, the Kennedy Center's Artistic Director for jazz, created the Women's Jazz Festival, It was dedicated to the composer and pianist Mary Lou Williams, in honor of her extraordinary talent. The Mary-Lou Williams Jazz Festival has existed for sixteen years, women of any age or race can participate.

 Louis Armstrong was born in August 4, 1901 in New Orleans and was an American jazz trumpeter, composer and singer. He was know as ´Satchmo´ or ´Pops´  His career spanned from the 1920s to the 1960s, covering many different eras of jazz.  He dies in July 6, 1971.

 On March 19, 1918, at the age of 16, Louis married Daisy Parker, a prostitute from Gretna, Louisiana. They adopted a 3-year-old boy, Clarence, whose mother, died soon after giving birth.

 In his early years, Armstrong was best known for his virtuosity with the cornet and trumpet.  As his music progressed and popularity grew, his singing also became very important.  Armstrong was not the first to record scat singing, but he was masterful at it and helped popularize it with the first recording on which he scatted, "Heebie Jeebies". 

·She was an American singer, dancer, pianist and actress, who appeared in several films late in her career. As a singer she performed a number of styles, including jazz and blues. She entered blues history by being the first African-American artist to make vocal blues recordings in ·She was born in 1883 in Ohio and she died in 1943 with 63 years. 4Ziw_CfQ
