Into a New Century Ch. 29 Section 1: The Technology Revolution By: Mr. Parsons

I.The Rise of the Compact computer A.In 1946 the world’s first electronic digital computer, called ENIAC. B.Weighing over 30 tons, it took up the floor space of a medium size house.

II.Improving the computer C. In 1957 Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce and other scientist made the integrated circuit. D. This made computer chips easier to make and smaller. E. Many electronic companies opened in what is known as the Silicon Valley just south of San Francisco.

III.Intel and Apple F. In 1968 Moore and Noyce formed Intel, that revolutionized micro processors. G. These new micro processors increase the speed and capability of smaller computers. H. Stephan Wozniak and Steven Jobs set up a small computer based company known today as Apple Incorporated.

IV.IBM vs. Macintosh vs. Windows I. In 1981 International Business Machines (IBM) introduced the personal computer or (PC). J. In 1984 Apple responded with its own personal computer called, Macintosh. K. A 19 yr old Harvard dropout, Bill Gates, co-founded Microsoft PC software. L. In 1985 Microsoft introduced “Windows” a mouse activated on screen graphic PC.

V.The telecommunications Revolution A. The 1970s, 80s, and 90s lead to deregulation of telecommunications. B. This lead to more creativity and competition in the telephone and television industries. C. In 1996 Congress passed the Telecommunications Act.

VI.The Rise of the Internet A. Digital electrons made worldwide communication possible with the creation of the internet. B. The roots of the internet started with the U.S. Defense Department Advanced Research Project Agency in 1969.

C. The systems linked government agencies, defense contractors, and scientist at various universities. D. The use of the Internet expanded by almost 300 percent between 1977 and E. The Internet also created a “dot.com” economy selling products and advertising online.

VII.Breakthroughs in Biotechnology A. Computer aided scientist in biotechnology, the managing of biological systems to improve human life. B. Researchers have used this to develop new medicines, animal growth hormones, genetically engineered plants and Industrial chemicals.

VIII.DNA and the Computer A. In 1953 James Watson and his colleague Francis Crick, deciphered the structure of DNA. B. Understanding DNA structure was important as it determined cells growth in all forms of life. C. With the development of the supercomputer it was now possible to map out the human genome and record DNA sequences in multiple species.

D. The Human Genome Project began at the National Institute of Health in E. All their data they collected was placed on the internet for free.
