Health Promotion Track Competencies 1.Apply theory in the development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion interventions, programs, and policies 2.Develop interventions and programs to effect change at multiple levels, including individual, community, organization, and policy 3.Design and implement strategies to promote health 4.Solicit and integrate input from community and organization stakeholders 5.Design and deliver health communication messages

6.Evaluate and interpret results from program evaluations and other research 7.Define research problems, frame research questions, design research procedures, and outline methods of analysis 8.Apply ethical principles that govern the practice of public health 9.Enact cultural competency in diverse social and cultural communities 10.Develop a substantive Area of Emphasis Health Promotion Track Competencies

Field Experience AKA “Graduate Internship” Purpose: To demonstrate and apply knowledge and skills gained during program in a real-world, supervised setting. Part of Culminating Experience 200 hours, over one or (preferably) two terms In an applied environment with public health preceptor All core & track required classes must be completed before beginning All HP MPH students must complete Graded A-F

Dual Degrees MSW/MPH and MURP/MPH Must apply to, and be accepted by, both programs, independently Three years of full-time study to complete

Application to SOPHAS Access via and click on ‘Apply Here’ Search for Oregon MPH (not PSU) and identify track/campus Complete application fields Include one official transcript from each college or university attended, including PSU, JCs and/or CCs Identify three people who can provide letters of recommendation Compose personal statement following SOPHAS guidelines and word limits Official GRE scores, and TOEFL scores, if applicable Please direct application questions to:

GRE All students not holding completed graduate degrees from accredited US institutions must take the GRE GRE code for Portland State University 1045 Recommended minimum scores: 4.5 Analytical 153 Verbal 144 Quantitative

TOEFL All applicants from countries in which English is not the official language are required to take the TOEFL. International students with bachelor or master’s degrees from an accredited US institution, or an English speaking college/university in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, or Ireland are exempt from taking the TOEFL exam. Minimum score: 550 paper, 213 computer, internet-based

Letters of Recommendation A critical part of the application Should address past academic performance, as well as prospects for career in public health Letters for each of the joint degrees must be degree- specific

Statement of Purpose Also critical May wish to include:  Relevant experiences  Understanding of field of public health and the role of health promotion  Issues facing public health  Vision of your professional role in field  What you expect to gain from PSU and OMPH Program

Prerequisite Undergraduate statistics course Receive passing letter grade See PSU Stat 243, Introduction to Probability and Statistics (4 cr), for an example of an acceptable course

Application Deadlines December 1 early decision, February 1 final deadline All materials must be submitted to SOPHAS and to PSU by close of business on application deadline Please plan sufficient time for delivery of GRE scores, transcripts, and letters of recommendation
