Who Eats What? FOOD CHAINS
The main source of energy for life on Earth comes from the Sun. Plants use light energy from the sun to make food.
What are Food Chains and Food Webs?. Food Chains Living things need one another to survive. A food chain shows the order in which animals eat plants and.

Interactions in Ecosystems
How do organisms get energy?. Getting Energy Food chain – a sequence of connected producers and consumers Producer – an organism that makes its own food.
Decomposers are organisms that eat dead or decaying organisms. They carry out the natural process of decomposition. Fungi is the primary and most common.

Energy Flow in an Ecosystem. Energy flows through an ecosystem as one organism eats another. The way in which energy flows can determine how many species.

Presentation transcript:

Food Chains and Food Webs

Food Chain  Events in which one organism eats another.

Producer  An organism that can make its own food.  Plants

Consumer  An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms.

Decomposer  An organism that breaks down dead organisms. (Bacteria & Fungi)

Primary Consumer  Consumers that eat producers.  Example: rabbit

Secondary Consumers  Consumers that eat primary consumers. Third Level Consumers  Consumers that eat secondary consumers.

Food Web  A pattern of overlapping food chains in an ecosystem.

Food Chain Practice  Create a food chain using the following organisms: –grasshopper, hawk, grass and snake  You must use arrows.  You must label the: –producer –primary consumer –secondary consumer –third level consumer.
