SLANTED PLANES

So far we have been studying converging lines that meet at the vanishing point on our eye level. We are now going to study drawing objects with slanted planes that do not have their converging lines meet at a vanishing point at the eye level. We are going to study drawing objects that are on an incline. Receding dimension lines that are level will converge to a vanishing point on the eye level. Receding dimension lines that are not level will converge to a vanishing point not on the eye level.

ONE-POINT PERSPECTIVE OF A BOOK ON A TABLE: V.P. If the book is flat on the table (on the same plane, the vanishing point is at eye level. If the book is slanted (inclined), the vanishing point is not on the same eye level as the table. SPVP

V.P. TWO-POINT PERSPECTIVE OF SLANTED (INCLINED) BOOK Draw shape of book as a box. Use X Method to find center of book. Draw book.

V.P. SPVP DRAWING SLANTED ROOFS – TWO POINT 1.DRAW LEADING EDGE OF BUILDING. 2.DRAW CONVERGING LINES TO V.P. 3.USING “X” METHOD FIND MIDDLE OF SHORT SIDE AND EXTEND FOR ROOF PITCH. 4.DRAW VERTICAL TRACE LINE ABOVE LEFT V.P. 5. DRAW SLANTED ROOF TO SPVP. 6. COMPLETE ROOF 7. ADD OVERHANG, GARAGE DOOR, LAP SIDING, WINDOWS AND FLOOR LINES

ONE-POINT GARAGE This is just the start of the One-point garage. SPVP V.P. It is necessary to draw the back wall to find the middle as you did on the front, so that you can draw the correct slant of the roof there.

Part of our SLANTED PLANE lessons are the drawing of roads and they change planes – going up and down hills or changing directions. In your text, PERSPECTIVE, on pages 48 and 49 are illustrations on how to draw roads that change directions or go up or down hills. Those on page 48 are one-point perspective. Those on page 49 are two-point perspective. ROADS

STUDENT ASSIGNMENT: Using the information about drawing garages and drawing roads in perspective with slanted planes, you are to create a full page landscape. Here are the minimum requirements: One road with multiple vanishing points on unleveled surface, one garage or similar building, two trees (prefer more), grass, and complete with shading and shadows. In your text, Perspective, you will find examples of shading, trees, and landscapes on pages 59, 60, 62, 63, and 64.
