Global Wind Patterns. Remember… When we talked about air pressure we said that cold air sinks and warm air rises. This movement causes air to move.
What causes wind? The uneven heating of Earth’s surface by the sun causes temperature differences in air. Warm air rises, creating areas of low pressure.

Bellwork10/8/14 Think of latitude vs. longitude. How do you tell the two apart?

Vocab Weather-the condition of Earth’s atmosphere at a particular time and place Wind-air that moves horizontally, or parallel to the ground Global Winds-winds that travel long distances in steady patterns over several weeks Coriolis effect-the influence of Earth’s rotation on objects that move over Earth Jet Stream-wind that flows in the upper troposphere from west to east over vast distances at great speeds Monsoons-Winds that change directions with the seasons

Uneven Heating Causes Air to Move Wind moves from higher pressure toward lower pressure “How Wind Forms” Visual How would the pressure between the two areas being very large affect the wind?

Global Winds Uneven heating between the equator and the north and south poles causes global winds. Which area of the Earth would have low pressure? High pressure? What sets the global winds in motion?

Earth’s Rotation Affects Wind Direction If Earth did NOT rotate, global winds would flow directly from the poles to the equator. Earth’s rotation changes the direction of winds and other objects moving over Earth. Global winds curve as the Earth turns beneath them. ^This is called the Coriolis effect and only affects global winds.

Coriolis Effect Global winds travel along 3 routes in each hemisphere…these routes, which circle the world, are called global wind belts.

Jet Streams Each hemisphere usually has 2 jet streams, a polar jet stream and a subtropical jet stream. Polar jet stream has a strong influence on weather in North America. Why would the Polar jet stream have a strong influence on our weather?

Local Winds Why are they called local winds?

Monsoons Monsoons flow long distances and affect large areas.
