Agenda 1. Bell work. 2. Rock, paper, scissors activity. 3. Discussion/debrief. 4. Guided notes. Objective: Students will be able to understand basic characteristics of communism.

Directions/Procedures 1. Teacher will distribute tokens for the game. 2. You will have the opportunity to compete for more tokens by playing rock, paper, scissors. 3. Rules of the game: the winner will take one token from the loser of the game. 4. Students can compete as long as they have one token to risk in the game. 5. If you lose all of your tokens, you must return to your seat. 6. When you return to your seat, get out a piece of paper and respond to the questions on the board.

Debriefing Rock, Paper, Scissors 1. How did you feel at the start of the game? 2. How did you feel when you ran out of candy and had to quit the game? Explain. 3. What tactics could you have used to get back into the game? Why didn’t you try those tactics? 4. Do you think this game was fair? Why or why not? State your reasons. 5. Now that the game is over, what action could the teacher take, if any, to make the game fair? Should the teacher take such an action? Why or why not?

Karl Marx’s Theory of Communism Karl Marx- Philosopher of economics concerned with production and distribution of goods.

Karl Marx’s Theory of Communism Marx was born in 1818 and saw how capitalism played out freely during the Industrial Revolution. Marx argued that capitalism created a class struggle between the rich and working class.

Marx’s Theory of Communism Marx encouraged the workers to revolt against the wealthy capitalists. Socialism- Resources are distributed equally by the government. Classless society. Communism- A system in which there is a classless society without any government. End goal of socialism.

Capitalism Students started with their own tokens. Students played rock, paper, scissors. Some students won, most lost.

Class Struggle Discussed how winners and losers felt.

Workers Revolt Planned to get tokens back (for example, by stealing) and argued about game’s fairness.

Socialism Teacher (government) collected candy. Teacher redistributed candy equally. Students have the same amount of candy.

Communism Students would refuse to play the game again and would choose to share candy. Teacher would no longer need to supervise.
