I-NAMES Corporation Database Privacy Policy Database Policy SIG, APNIC Meeting at Taipei, Taiwan Lee, Seung-Min

I-NAMES Corporation Contents 1.Background 2.The current APNIC registration policy in APNIC Proposal

I-NAMES Corporation Background The broadband working group noted that –Although the correct registration of public address space is a central goal of the internet registry system, the current expression of the policy raises important privacy concerns, particularly in relation to cable and xDSL networks( residential network) where static addressing techniques are more common.

I-NAMES Corporation The Current APNIC Registration Policy in APNIC-076

I-NAMES Corporation APNIC-076 Title –Policies for address space management in the ASIA pacific region Approved : 1 October 1999 Effective : 1 January 2000 Next review: TBA Obsoletes: n/a Amended : august, 2000 –Minimum practical allocation changed from /19 to /20.

I-NAMES Corporation Registration Requirements Section 7.17 states that –At the time of making allocations or assignments, IRs must properly register in the APNIC whois database every allocation and assignment of address space they make. –The information in the database is necessary for internet trouble shooting and provides for a level of accountability and transparency that is of benefit to the entire internet community.

I-NAMES Corporation Registration of Residential Information Section states that –"Unless exceptional circumstances require otherwise, the administrative contact ('admin-c') must be someone who is physically located at the site of the network."

I-NAMES Corporation Proposal

I-NAMES Corporation Basic Concept Cautious approach to personal information –Only collect what data is necessary –Make full disclosure of how data is to be used –Limit the use of, and access to, the data to what is necessary –Protect the personal information

I-NAMES Corporation Amend Section 7.17 The section 7.17 should be amended to state as following –Every network assignment greater than /30 must be registered. –Assignments of /30 or smaller, including host assignments, may be registered at the discretion of the end-user and ISP.

I-NAMES Corporation Amend Section This section should be amended to state that –In the case of residential users only, there should be the option to register the ISP's technical contact as the administrative contact (admin-c). ※ Note, for non-residential networks the current "exceptional circumstances" clause will still apply.)
