The Hermitage Stream

Building Leigh Park After World War II, lots of people had to leave Portsmouth. Leigh Park was built to house them. It was the biggest housing estate ever built in England.

What happened to the Hermitage Stream? To make way for the houses, and to reduce the chance of a flood, the Hermitage Stream was ‘channelised’. The stream was straightened out...

The banks and the bed of the stream were covered in concrete and the stream was made deeper.

Spot the differences!

Field Study of the Hermitage Stream 1. The Stream Channel We are going to compare two sites We are going to find out about: – The size of the stream – How fast the water flows – What the banks and the bed of the stream are made from

Field Study of the Hermitage Stream 2. Humans We are going to find out about the people that go to the stream, and what they do there. Why do you think it is important for people to be able to go to the stream?
