Investigation TE Thermal Energy can be transferred through three different ways: –Conduction – direct contact –Convection – bulk movement of matter in a fluid –Radiation – the absorption of waves

1 st task Predict what will happen if you simultaneously, place two drops of food dye into the hot water and the cold water. After your hypothesize, carry-out the task!

2 nd Task Dump the dyed cold water down the drain and fill with clean, clear cold water from the tap. Place the Hot Dyed water on top of the cold clear water (see demo for method)

3 rd Task Invert the setup. –Put the cold clear on top of the hot dyed water and make observations.

Convection Clearly the Hot water wanted to be on the top –Although it’s really better to think about the cold water NEEDING to be on the bottom. Explain why you think the cold water needed to be on the bottom. Does density play a role? Which is more dense, hot or cold water? In which material are the particles moving faster? The cold water was more dense, and therefore sank to the bottom. The difference in density caused the motion of the fluid. The cold water is more dense. The particles are moving faster in the hot water, therefore it is less dense.
