The Early Years 1647 Massachusetts Bay Colony sets guidelines for education 50 families – elementary school 100 families – Latin school 1790 Pennsylvania (and later other states) start free education, but only for the poor 1837 Horace Mann heads Massachusetts State Board of Education

Industrialization and Change 1840s Religion becomes involved in educational curriculums and schools 1851 Massachusetts passes first compulsory education law 1864 Congress makes it illegal for Native Americans to be taught in native language 1871 UNIVERITY OF ARKANSAS is established as only land grant university in the state (Go Hogs!)
