Water Efficiency in Business

Anglian Water

Anglian Water currently supply the same amount of water as we did in 1989 Managed demand: Metering / leakage / water efficiency Unmanaged demand

Industrial water usage in the UK Envirowise EN952 review of water use in industry and commerce

5 Water efficiency – vital to Anglian Water One of the driest regions in the country Just 600mm of rain each year 3 rd less than the national average Lower rainfall per person than in Sudan / Syria Growing region EA pressure to reduce abstractions Ofwat targets Climate change Limited resource External pressures Energy Flat low lying region ¼ below sea level 80,000km water / wastewater networks Pumping is energy intensive Energy costs rising

6 Saving water – the drivers Water consumption saving water will reduce your water and energy bills! lower operating costs for water companies means lower water charges for customers reducing water consumption will help plug the UK energy gap heating water needs a lot of energy the more hot water we use, the greater the emissions of greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change using hot water in our homes alone contributes around 35 million tonnes of greenhouse gases a year. Reducing Carbon Footprint Reducing costs UK population expected to reach 65 Million by 2020 growth is essential to the UK economy water demand could increase by 5% an additional 800 million litres of water a day!!!!! the UK is already water stressed

Saving water – Stage 1 Build on solid foundations There needs to be a commitment to water efficiency at senior management level Focus on reducing your water footprint by appointing at least one person as your water champion Make sure the bills are not simply paid by your accounts department Key personnel should have access and use the bills to check and drive consumption

8 Stage 2 – Understand your usage Water audit Is your site using what it should be? Bench-marking If you have multiple sites, compare their water usage

9 Cultural change may be needed Education is essential Get everyone to be “Waterwise” Challenge staff to make a difference Focus on environmental responsibility It needs to be ongoing Hold a workshop to brainstorm ideas to save water Include contractors to identify best practice Benchmark against your other sites Set and agree KPI’s Monitor performance on an ongoing basis Keep staff involved, consulted, informed Feedback success stories Maintain focus through regular campaigns Remember a one off won’t work! Obtaining buy-in is essential Get everyone involved Stage 3 - Engage with your employees

Consider the full payback Water Technology List (WTL) 1 tonne of water saved 0.34 kg of avoided C0 2 Don’t forget the carbon impact

Retro-fit Products EcoBeta toilet flushing device Tap Inserts Shower flow regulators and water efficient heads Water displacement devices

Opportunities to save Installing water efficient appliances and fittings at the building stage helps occupiers to save water, energy and money more easily Installing more water efficient appliances when updating sanitary ware Installing water saving devices on existing appliances will improve performance

What can you do now? Incorporate water efficient design into new build When refurbishing install water efficient appliances Build water efficiency assessment into maintenance programmes Seek out and learn about what’s on offer in terms of water efficient devices and goods Use everyone within your organisation to promote and help make the right decision Speak to your water company

Positive messages If you measure it you can monitor consumption and reduce it Water efficient products are not inferior Saving water saves energy and money Water Companies will have lower investment costs to pass on Our impact on the environment is reduced Everyone wins!!!
