2016 Transition Night ( 1 st Grade entering 2 nd Grade)

 More outgoing and ready for new friends  Lots of energy, excitement, enthusiasm and curiosity  Care about what others think and do  Short term interests  Might be impatient-ready for a new challenge  Overestimate abilities and critical of themselves when they don’t succeed. Characteristics of a 2nd Grade Student

 Responsible for taking/returning correspondence. ( Backpacks, Homework, Thursday Folders, Special Notes)  Develop Organizational Skills (Putting things back where they go, crayons, scissors, games)  Waiting/Taking turns (playing games and class discussions)  Speaking/Listening Skills  Knows how to tie shoes  Phone number and address  Transportation (getting home from school) School Expectations

 All short vowels mastered  Long vowels master (CVCe)  Blends- beginning and final (bl, sm, sp, dr, nd)  Kindergarten and First grade sight words (provided)  Rhyming words- oral and written  Basic Comprehension- Characters, Setting, and Sequence Reading

 Identify and write numbers to 120  Skip counting by 2, 5, 10  Fluent with addition skills to the sum of ten and doubles 3+3, 4+4, 4+6, 7+3, 8+2  Telling time to the hour and half-hour  Identify coins and know the value Math

 Print your child's favorite songs and read the lyrics  During breakfast, have your child read off the cereal box.  Reading maps, brochures at museums or parks  While driving in the car, practice sight word lists and basic spelling pattern.  Keep a journal about their summer adventures and trips Reading Summer Activities

 Have your child help read a recipe to you while using measuring cups/spoons.  Work on addition flashcards  Ipad and computer math games- Xtra Math, Reflex math- NOT Cool Math  Any activities involving bills and coins- identifying and counting coins Math Summer Activities

 Students who miss school show lower academic achievement than those with regular attendance.  Absences add up quickly.  Children who aren’t in school are more likely to get in trouble.  Avoid scheduling appointments during school. (8:50- 3:40)  Attendance patterns are set at a young age.  Letters are sent an 7, 14 and 20 days. After 20 days retention is considered by the school committee. Attendance
