Social Changes The Great Awakening was a religious movement in the 1760s that promoted religion. It pressed the colonists to question traditional religious authority. Enlightenment thinkers urged people to question political authority. Combined, it created a strong spirit of liberty.

French & Indian War As the colonies grew, they expanded westward onto Native American and French territory. The French and Native Americans fought against England and the colonists to stop them. The French lost, and were forced to give their land to England.

New Laws and Taxes Proclamation of 1763 – forbade colonists from settling in new lands won from France Stamp Act – a new tax on any paper product to pay for French and Indian War. Colonists boycotted the act and it was repealed Declaratory Act – new law that stated that Parliament had the right to tax and make ALL decisions for colonies

Boston Tea Party Tea Act – tax on tea. This upset the colonists since they drank it often. They protested by dumping tea into the Boston Harbor. This became known as the Boston Tea Party.
