Inventory and Stowage Overview Kay Standridge February 26, 2004 MSFC/ESA TIM #2

February 26, 2004ISO Overview Agenda Define Inventory and Stowage ISO –Define –Responsibilities –Schedule –Daily Activity –Training ESA Contribution

February 26, 2004ISO Overview Inventory and Stowage –Inventory—What is onboard ISS? –Stowage—Where are the items located? It is necessary to track where everything is onboard to ease crew operations. –Saves crew time –1000s of items onboard

February 26, 2004ISO Overview OPS Concept –The ISS crews (especially the 2 & 3 member crews) do not have the time to keep track of all the items on ISS and are relying on the ground team to support them and help keep IMS accurate and current –No one position can be knowledgeable on all these items –Recommend that the “owners” of the hardware provide this support RISS responsible for Russian items ISO responsible for US items ESA ISO responsible for ESA items

February 26, 2004ISO Overview Who is ISO? Inventory and Stowage Officer Member of NASA Flight Control Team (FCT) Responsible for: – Maintaining database of inventory and stowage –Relaying information to crew and FCT ISS FLIGHT CIO ISO

February 26, 2004ISO Overview What does ISO do? Database maintenance Build Stowage Notes Resolve stowage issues Coordinate Audits Coordinate other stowage related tasks –Unpack –Relocation –Prepack

February 26, 2004ISO Overview Database Maintenance Inventory Management System (IMS): –Tracks loose and some installed hardware/items –Not used to track locations of items used daily or crew preference Crew is prime for making updates ISO updates per crew request and established agreements for specific tasks –Planned procedure installations

February 26, 2004ISO Overview

February 26, 2004ISO Overview IMS Overview MCC-H MCC-M Baikonur MCC-ESA POIC ESA Delta File Transfer Delta File Transfer (OCA via Ku Band) Delta File Transfer (if implemented) Search page & IMS read only Database Facility Legend

February 26, 2004ISO Overview Onboard Tools SSCs OCA BCR ISS Ops LAN and IMS SSC File Server ISS Via RF LAN

February 26, 2004ISO Overview Database Maintenance Exchange Delta Files –Need to communicate changes among 4 databases (MCC-H, MCC-M, Baikonur, ISS) –Daily Exchange Data Loading/Deleting for Shuttle/ATV Flights –Flight Lead ISO –Load all new items into database when they launch –Delete return items from database when confirmed on ground Data Corrections –Make corrections to database if needed

February 26, 2004ISO Overview Stowage Notes List sent to crew with locations of all items needed for all activities timelined or tasklisted for that day –ISO looks through US (SODF) Procedures in timeline and determines which use tools or equipment that require giving the crew stowage locations –Receive inputs from POIC Stowage at Marshall with US Payload Procedure (PODF) stowage information –Receive inputs from IPs with IP stowage information –Integrate into one document and get approved –Incorporate in Ops Note in OSTPV –Uplink as separate file to crew via OCA “Shopping List”

February 26, 2004ISO Overview Resolve Stowage Issues Answer questions from crew and FCT Suggest stowage for minor issues –Know constraints –Group like items together –History Coordinate major issues with ISSPO –Stowage –Manifesting –Audits –Other stowage tasks

February 26, 2004ISO Overview Coordinating US Audits Purpose of Audits: –Preparation for resupply or prepack Empty space Specific item search –Manifesting –Database integrity Types of Audits: –Item (quantity, status, location, etc) –Location contents –Consolidation (post audit task)

February 26, 2004ISO Overview US Audit Process Audit Request Form (ARF) submitted by: –Crew –Other FCT discipline –ISO –ISSPO Approved by FLIGHT, IMC Requesting party submits Planning Product Change Request (PPCR) to add activity to timeline ISO builds Audit, uplinks after approved Compile results and distribute to originator

February 26, 2004ISO Overview A Day in the Life of an ISO… Increment Ops Schedule –2 8-hour shifts a day, Monday – Friday 0200 to 1000 and 0900 to 0500 Houston time –1 2 to 4-hour shift weekends and crew holidays 0900 Houston time Joint Ops Schedule –3 shifts a day for docked portion of mission ISO Assignments –7 to 9 ISOs per Increment, 3 per US docked flight –1 Lead assigned to Increment, each US Flight –1 Point of Contact to IPs, other FCT disciplines –ISOs work other positions

February 26, 2004ISO Overview ISO Daily Duties Both shifts: –Maintain situational awareness (monitor loops, review CHITS, PPCRs, etc) –Maintain database as needed –Look for new delta files from RISS, certify, and uplink Orbit 1 –Check for new delta files from crew and send to RISS Review content Ensure expected changes made –Tag up with RISS to resolve issues Orbit 2 –Submit Stowage Note –Export delta file

February 26, 2004ISO Overview ISO Training Reading –ISS –Flight Controller –ISO Classes –IMS/BCR –Mockup Tours On the job training (OJT) –2 weeks passive –1 week active Proficiency –Yearly recertification

February 26, 2004ISO Overview ESA Contribution Communication –Will have read-only access with history to MCC-H IMS database –IP STOWAGE Loop for voice communication with ISO –Daily Tag-up with ISO MCC-H IMS status Any ESA inventory/stowage issues Changes to activities for the next two days Upcoming inventory/stowage activities

February 26, 2004ISO Overview ESA Contribution Stowage Notes –Provide inputs for all ESA (Columbus Systems, ESA Payloads) procedures to ISO –Use Stowage Note format –Schedule to be established Daily IMS review –Provide IMS updates to ISO per crew activity –Provide discrepancies with justification to ISO ISO reviews and makes changes or gives ESA explanation
