Matter: Properties and Changes Mixtures What is a mixture? when two or more substances are combined the individual substances retain their individual chemical.
Section 1 - What Is a Solution? Mixtures You have learned about the difference between pure substances and mixtures. Mixtures can either be heterogeneous.
Mixtures and Solutions Notes  Pure substance: matter that has definite chemical and physical properties  Mixture: matter that contains two or more substances.

Ways to Separate Mixtures
Separation Processes. Separation processes are used to separate mixtures. Filtration, evaporation, decantation and sedimentation are all separation processes.
Methods of Mixture Separation 1)Mechanical Separation (often by hand) takes advantage of physical properties such as color and shape. Example: Recycling.

TO MAKE WATER SAFER TO DRINK. REMOVE ANY IMPURITIES OR PATHOGENS OBTAIN GASES, DIESEL FUEL, TAR, FURNACE OIL SEPARATE METALS IN MANUFACTURING OR JEWELERY WHY WOULD WE SEPARATE?

HOW TO SEPARATE? DECANTATION When a mixture’s constituents have different densities, they separate into different layers. Each layer can then be poured out individually. HOW TO SEPARATE? DECANTATION

HOW TO SEPARATE? CENTRIFUGATION This technique accelerates and accentuates the decantation process using centrifuge, which is an instrument that can spin a mixture at high speeds. HOW TO SEPARATE? CENTRIFUGATION

HOW TO SEPARATE? FILTRATION This process involves passing a solid- liquid or a solid-gas (ex. Smoke) mixture through a filter. The solids stay on the surface of the filter. HOW TO SEPARATE? FILTRATION

HOW TO SEPARATE? EVAPORATION This technique makes it possible to collect a solid that has dissolved. The liquid in the solid-liquid mixture evaporates (leaving only the solid) HOW TO SEPARATE? EVAPORATION

HOW TO SEPARATE? DISTILLATION This technique is based on the different boiling points of a mixture’s constituents. When heated, they boil off and condense at different temperatures. HOW TO SEPARATE? DISTILLATION

HOW TO SEPARATE? CHROMATOGRAPHY This technique separates a mixture into its various constituents using porous paper and a solvent. The differences in the rates with which the constituents travel along the paper lead to their separation HOW TO SEPARATE? CHROMATOGRAPHY
