Presentation transcript:

What forces shape a shoreline? A shoreline is where land and a body of water meets. Strong waves may erode material Gentle waves may deposit material Oceans have currents that also erode and deposit material. http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/02/ocean-gravity-current-diving/ When the current travels parallel to the shoreline causing the waves to hit the shore at an angle it is called a longshore current.

What coastal landforms are made by erosion ? The rate at which a rock erodes depends on the hardness of the rock and the energy of the waves. Types of coastal landforms: Sea Cliffs Wave-cut Platforms Sea Caves Arches Stacks

Sea Cliffs and Wave-cut Platforms A sea cliff forms when waves erode and undercut a cliff’s base to make steep slopes. A sea cliff eroded above the waterline is called a wave-cut platform.

Sea Caves, Arches, and Stacks Sea Caves are formed when waves erode cracks in the sea cliff faster than other parts. Sea Arch forms when a sea cave is eroded through the sea cliff. Sea Stacks form when the top of a sea arch collapses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ncfli36wxg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fS2Swi0q-U

What coastal landforms are made by deposition? A beach is an area of shoreline made up of materials deposited by waves and currents. A sandbar is an underwater or exposed ridge of sand, gravel , or shell material. A barrier island is a long narrow island, usually made of sand that forms parallel to shoreline.
