DEVELOPMENT OF A TIMELINE FOR A REVIEW OF SCIENCE AND POSSIBLE MANAGEMENT ACTIONS FOR COYOTES Fish and Game Commission October 8, 2014 Agenda item 16 (b)

 Can an explicit problem statement be defined? Is it that:  take of coyotes is “unlimited”?  active management is needed?  or?  A clear problem statement will inform a timeline and Department product(s)  Implement necessary structural regulatory changes STEP 1. DEFINE THE ISSUES AND OBJECTIVES

Overview of basic ecology – literature review Population status and trend – literature and data review – Distribution – Habitat associations – Trends in take Summarize coyote/human wildlife conflicts STEP 2. COMPILE INFORMATION - JANUARY

Seek expert input and review of DFW summaries – Basic ecology – Distribution – Habitat associations – Trends in take – Coyote/human wildlife conflicts STEP 3. TECHNICAL WORKSHOP - MARCH

Describe the dynamics of coyote populations – By modeling, describe harvest effects on coyote populations – By modeling, describe coyote occupancy and predict habitat suitability STEP 4. MODELING POPULATION AND HABITAT SUITABILITY – MAY?

Is a species plan needed? Are population monitoring metrics needed? – If so, how detailed/fine do metrics need to be? – If so, how to fund? Are additional non-structural regulation or statutory changes needed? STEP 5. MANAGEMENT PLAN AND NON-STRUCTURAL REGULATORY CHANGE RECOMMENDATIONS – BEGIN IN SEPTEMBER?
