When a story goes back in time to tell a specific event. A flashback gives readers information to help explain the main events in a story. When an author gives clues to prepare readers for events to happen later in a story.

On your own paper, answer the questions below in 4 sentences or MORE. Your answers should be a blend of your ideas combined with details from the story. 1.The very first page of the novel shows that image is important to Ponyboy. What image is he trying to project? Why is this important? 2.This is what Ponyboy says about fighting the Socs, “And you can't win against them no matter how hard you try, because they've got all the breaks and even whipping them isn't going to change that fact.” page 11 Use your own words to explain what this means. 3.Why is it odd for Johnny to tell Dally to leave the girls (Cherry & Marcia) alone at the drive-in? p24 4.Explain how foreshadowing & flashback are used in chapter 2.
