Current Members Commissioner Robert Allen (Chair) Commissioner Rob Boyd Commissioner Mike Donohue Commissioner Dave Eichers Commissioner Geoff Hollimon Commissioner Bill Kerns Commissioner Tim Kocon Commissioner Judith Lamp Commissioner Ken Schumann Council Liaison – Council Member Mary Burg

Purpose Sec Purpose. The purpose of this Commission shall be to advise the City Council on matters that relate to the goals, policies, and operation of public safety functions and human rights issues, and maintain a liaison with the Police Civil Service Commission. (Ord. No. 610, ; Ord. No. 626, ; Code of 2001)

Primary Responsibilities Advisory to Council Human Rights issues Traffic calming including signage Advisory/review of Allina EMS function in New Brighton Serves as New Brighton Citizen Corps Council – advisory on volunteer programs

Commission Membership Changes Commissioner Benke, Commissioner Kroll and Commissioner Woods completed their service as Public Safety Commissioners in Commissioner Rob Boyd and Commissioner Dave Eichers were appointed in Commissioner Allen re-elected as Chairman Council Member Mary Burg became liaison in April

Commission Accomplishments – Crosswalk Study Reviewed and approved recommendations on a Crosswalk Study Referred by City Council in November 2013 Work completed by City Engineer and other City Staff Included input from residents Report back to Council in August 2014

Crosswalk Recommendations Comprehensive listing and review of all crosswalks completed (69 existing crosswalks) Direct staff to develop a crosswalk policy Recommended 42 improvements and made 9 general recommendations

Other Commission Accomplishments Reviewed Emergency Management Operations at the February meeting (Deputy Chief Hamdorf) Presentation by Kip LaMotte, Fire Marshal, at the September meeting on Fire Prevention and Public Education efforts in New Brighton

Human Rights Members on Human Rights Subcommittee include Judith Lamp, Ken Schuman and Tim Kocon No bias crime or human rights issues were brought forth to the Commission in 2014

Allina EMS Activity Allina Liaison Dave Matteson was very active attending the vast majority of Commission meetings and conducted ongoing reports Allina response to emergency medical calls is still 10 minutes or less 90% of the time! Helped to save three lives and delivered one baby this year!

Public Safety/Citizen Corps National Night Out – 4 th place in the Nation! parties held in the City – 15 th consecutive year in Top 5 and 15 th consecutive year of #1 in MN in our population category Volunteers Assisted with several Red Cross Blood Drives at the Public Safety Center

Public Safety/Citizen Corps VIPS and Explorers assisted with Santa Cop program – 57 families and 121 children Volunteer Appreciation Dinner volunteer attendees – Helen and John Mattson were Volunteers of the Year! Fire Division Open House in October – VIPS assisted with this annual event

Public Safety/Citizen Corps Volunteers in Public Safety donated 1,338 hours Police Reserves donated 1,607 hours Police Explorers donated 1,309 hours Total Documented Volunteer Hours of more than 4,254 hours Public Safety Commissioners donated numerous hours

Significant Department Personnel Changes Hired two new Police Officers – Brianna Riedel and Cody Amberg Finished recruitment effort for new Firefighters hiring 10 new Firefighters! Hired Office Technician Jody Boyd Several retirements including Andy Masterman, Duane Bousema, Tom Roback Completed Sergeants promotional process – Appointed Burt Emerson as Sgt effective January 1st

Departmental Accomplishments Saved Three Lives this year Crime Rate will be second lowest in the last 25 years Fire calls and fire losses very low again this year Staffing is at authorized strength for police and fire
