Why Did the Sheep Cross the Road?

High, in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, live beautiful sheep called bighorn sheep. 1

2 Colorado N S EW

They live high in the mountains, on rocky peaks, 3

and on the edge of cliffs! 4

Rocky cliffs keep them safe from humans, wolves, and bears. 5

Only mountain lions can follow them to the top of the mountains. 6

Bighorn sheep have special hooves, or feet. They are hard on the outside and spongy and soft in the middle. 7

Their special hooves help them stay on rocks. It is easy to climb and jump! 8

The sheep eat grasses on the mountains and in the meadows. 9

In Rocky Mountain National Park, the sheep need more than just the grass that grows high on the mountain. They need the minerals that are in the mud around Sheep Lakes. 10

The sheep come down the hill. But, a road is in the way! 11

The sheep crosses the road to get to the lake. 12

Down the hill, across the grass… 13

..to the lake. He can get the minerals that help to nourish his body. 14

Then he runs back up to the road, 15

…back up the mountain, 16

into the rocks, 17

back home at the top! 18
