TODAY'S AGENDA: ▪ Warm-Up: What is a Tragic Hero? (10 minutes) ▪ Definitions ▪ Identifying Okonkwo as a Tragic Hero (15 minutes) ▪ And identifying other tragic heroes from film/books ▪ Assessment: 4-point Response (25-30 minutes) ▪ GOAL: ▪ Recognize: Is Okonkwo is developing, as a character, into a tragic hero? How might this impact his fate?

WARM-UP: WHAT IS A TRAGIC HERO? ▪ You will be watching a 6 minute clip introducing Tragic Hero ▪ While you are watching, write down the definitions for tragic hero, catharsis, hamartia, hubris, and tragic downfall ▪ You will also learn the terms anagnorisis and nemesis

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON A TRAGIC HERO ▪ Anagnorisis - The moment when the hero makes an important discovery in the story ▪ Nemesis - A fortune or fate that the hero cannot avoid, usually due to the retribution of his hubris ▪ Hubris - A common flaw among tragic heroes that leads them to disregard divine warnings or violate laws
