Family Education on Dementia BY: KASEY POLLEY

Why I chose this topic  This topic is important to me because it is a fast growing disease and many people have someone in their family battling dementia.  I want to be able to bond with my patients and communicate because I believe there is nothing better than having a positive relationship with you and your patient.  making sure my patient trusts me and their family members  I want to have a fully understanding so I am able to engage in a therapeutic relationship with my patients.

Research Questions  Is there a certain way to speak to patient’s who have dementia?  Are there medications that work better than others for this disease?  What are some Dos and Dont’s dealing with dementia?

What factors of PICO are important?  P- Population is the patients with dementia  I- Interventions will depend of the articles  C- comparisons depend on articles  O- Outcomes will hopefully be a way to help family members understand the importance and care for their loved one with this particular disease.

Is there a certain way to speak to patient’s who have dementia?  non verbal communication is very important.  This type of communication includes facial expressions, eye contact, posture, appearance, gestures, personal space, and body contact  make sure to sit facing the patient  if non verbal communication is not met with patients or family members with dementia may make them feel isolated, deprived, and also detached from everyone  Mcghee, G. What are some new medications for dementia?  Intranasal Insulin  This drug helps with thinking, memory, and brain functioning  It Is very important the glucose is converted to energy for brain function  AADvac1  helps keep the neurons in the brain from “tangling”  Solanezumab  This drug helps with thinking, memory, and brain function - The outcomes of these medications are not curing the disease, it is a way one can slow the process of the disease. What are some Dos and Dont’s dealing with dementia?  When dealing with aggression, do not continue arguing or engage in an argument  try and identify the cause and try to figure out why they are feeling that type of way.  When someone is confused about place or time such as, “are we going home?” redirect their thoughts or even get a snack. A way to answer could be “We can’t leave until later because…”  Do not answer with long sentences and do not correct them if they are wrong -Stevenson, S. (2016, January 14). How will this help me in the future?  I will do my best to help educate a family member about their loved one who has this disease  teaching patient’s family could also help them teach others about education of their loved one’s with dementia as well  I will also know how to communicate with my patients and understand situations better.
