How to Write a Summary using Step Up to Writing

Step 1: Use Two-Column Notes Take notes while reading the text for quick review Find big ideas in each paragraph Leave empty space

Step 1: Use Three Part Method Write a topic sentence using the three-part topic sentence method Choose a graphic organizer to help you

Select a Verb explains describes compares gives tells shows provides lists presents teaches

Step 2: Copy to Make a Sentence From Step 1 – use the words to make a real sentence. Fix spelling, punctuation, and capitalization errors.

Step 3: Create a Fact Outline Use your two column notes Write short facts to support the main ideas

Step 4: Write the Summary Use the outline or graphic organizer to write the rough draft Do not write a conclusion sentence in a summary

Revise and Edit Edit your rough draft Look for errors Check the Writing Rubric to meet your goal

Write Your Final Copy Write your final paragraph Don’t forget to indent the first line Put the title in the middle on the top line Use your rough draft and don’t forget to correct your mistakes Check the Writing rubric before completing this assignment
