Mathematics: The Big Picture TMP Summer Institute, August 41 Standards WASL Curriculum Review High School Mathematics Courses College Readiness Test (Algebra II) 3 rd year Math credit 3 rd year Math credit College, Apprenticeships, Work

A Vision for the Future Five years from now, students entering high school will have much deeper mathematics knowledge that prepares them to take advantage of the rigorous mathematics courses that will be in place. 2TMP Summer Institute, August 4

A Vision for the Future High school graduates will be completing rigorous mathematics courses that prepare them for post- secondary opportunities. 3TMP Summer Institute, August 4

A Vision for the Future Students will complete either a traditional sequence (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II) or an integrated sequence (Integrated Math 1, Integrated Math II, Integrated Math III) with successful performance on end-of-course tests and the College Readiness Test. 4TMP Summer Institute, August 4

A Vision for the Future Students who completed Algebra II/IM III and are interested in science/mathematics careers will take a pre-calculus course, and students interested in humanities careers will have options for a fourth-year of mathematics in high school. 5TMP Summer Institute, August 4

Where are we now? The parts of the puzzle needed to make this vision come true are being constructed. 1. Rigorous K-8 mathematics standards 2. Rigorous high school mathematics standards 3. Review of basic and supplementary curriculum 4. Development of end-of-course and new WASL tests 5. Development/piloting of College Readiness Test 6. Specification of courses for third mathematics credit 7. Professional development for teachers 6TMP Summer Institute, August 4

Standards 1. Rigorous K-8 Mathematics Standards have been approved. 2. Rigorous High School Mathematics Standards have been approved. The high school standards have been organized into courses. 7TMP Summer Institute, August 4

Review of Curriculum Materials 3. Review of basic and supplementary curriculum materials will be completed by mid-fall 2008, so that districts can begin to implement these standards effectively. review of basic elementary curricula is completed, with a report due soon review of supplementary elementary materials is scheduled for August review of high school curricula will be complete by January TMP Summer Institute, August 4

Testing 4. Development of end-of-course tests and new WASL tests have begun WASL tests for grades 3-8 are being developed test design for 10 th grade and end-of-course tests are awaiting approval of high school standards 9TMP Summer Institute, August 4

College Readiness Test 5. Development and piloting of the College Readiness Test is well on its way to completion tests are being piloted community college and baccalaureates are talking about common cut scores 10TMP Summer Institute, August 4

Third Mathematics Credit 6. Third high school math credit adopted by State Board of Education in July 2008 high school standards “define” three years of courses fourth-year options need to be outlined, possibly with standards written fifth-year courses would include AP options (e.g., calculus, statistics) 11TMP Summer Institute, August 4

Professional Development 7. Professional development for teachers on the new standards has begun and will continue through K-8 professional development on standards is being delivered statewide high school materials are being developed high school facilitators trained in Tacoma in July 12TMP Summer Institute, August 4
