Racial Discrimination on College Campuses Krysten Bailey

I walk… I walk on campus Others don’t think I belong That I won’t be here for long Like my education isn’t as important As the others who get sent Mommy and daddy pay for their rent I feel the tension And it isn’t fun Not accepted and shunned

I walk real slow Wherever I go The color of my skin Supposedly can determine Who I am as a person. Racial Discrimination is REAL. Sm/Racial-Discrimination.html

Definition Racial discrimination can be to an individual discrimination.html

Definition Racial discrimination can be institutional / /

What is Racial Climate?

My research How does racial climate affect perceived racial discrimination on college campus? Online survey that asked UW T students questions on perceptions of campus climate, perceptions of academic experience, and personal information.

Pre-College Environment  Exposure to diversity before entering college; neighborhood, school, church, overall community  Interactions and relationships  Friendships  Dating  Whether they were positive or negative

Perceptions of Discrimination  What is the racial climate like?  Availability of opportunities for interactions with others from a differing racial group  A student’s satisfaction  Racial discrimination as taboo

Experiences of Discrimination  “Everyday racism”  Also examined as a progression  Can affect a student’s health

Results White students Students of color 91.7% No 8.3% Yes 40% No 60% Yes Been subjected to hostile stares because of my race/ethnic origin

Results  These acts were NOT REPORTED White students Students of color 100% No 60% No 40% Yes Been followed or stopped my campus police/security because of my race ethnic origin

Results 50% students of color 16.7% White students 83.3% White students

Racism is a Problem at this institution  70% students of color agree  91.7% White students disagree  A problem, but not reported. Is taboo.

College in our community  College is a part of our community as it brings people from our own community together, as well as those from other places  Educating students 95.5% very or somewhat important learn about other racial groups, and taking courses that include analysis, skills, and commitment to dismantling racism

Racially diverse work environment Very important 68.2% Somewhat important 27.3% Not important 4.5%

Significance  Students need and want to be prepared for the diverse workforce they will encounter  If uneducated on racial discrimination, they will carry that with them into their workplace, further perpetuating the web of discrimination

Web of discrimination Miller, J., & Garran, A. M. (2007). The web of institutional racism. Smith College Studies in Social Work, 77(1),

Racial Discrimination is real We need to face that fact that racial discrimination is real. If we continue to ignore it as we do, there will be no ability to change it. We should not tolerate discrimination. The color of my skin will not stop me from becoming successful and it should not be a barrier to anyone else in this community.

Time’s Up!  About you:  Name: Krysten Bailey  Department: Social Work  Contact Information:  Twitter/URL: N/A  Quick bio: I am passionate about advocating for social justice and providing a voice for those who are too scared or believe they do not have one because they have been oppressed, specifically people of color.
