Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests  Hold down the red globe light button for several seconds  The GPS will go into Acquiring Satellite Mode – this may take several minutes   Page (Button) Screen Steps   The page button will take you through 5 different screens.   GPS Information Map PageCompass Page   Bearing Distance ScreenActive Goto Page  The main screen we need to use is the Active Goto (Route) screen

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests  Menu  When you are in one of the Page Screens you can drill down to other functions within each Page Screen.  Two Page Screens we use  1)Active Goto Screen  This is the must important screen we use for GPS points that we use for mark laying.  The screen holds each GPS point as they are entered. It can hold up to 100 different GPS points.  2) Distance and Bearing Screen

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests  Hold the enter button down for approx 2 seconds.   This Active Goto Screen will then show   Mark Waypoint  Mark Number (next in the series used)  The date  The GPS Co ordinates e.g.S  E   And the bottom line Goto Map OK   Note the mark number that you have just entered.

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests Yachting WAPerth 2011

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests Yachting WAPerth 2011  How to set a GPS Reference Point   What I do is when I get on to the water I wait until the Start Boat is in position.   Pull right next to the Start Boat (race course side)  Why next to the start boat ?  I put in a GPS Mark and ask the Race Officer what he is thinking in terms of the bearing and distance. I then proceed to roughly my position at the Mark which I have been allocated  Then when the correct reference is confirmed (Mark 4 – start boat) it is easy to make the small changes to the Mark I’m using for that day by changing the rough Reference Point you have entered from the Start Boat. Once you have corrected the co ordinates for the GPS point you entered at the start boat this now becomes the Reference Point we work to.

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests  How to change a GPS Reference Point   Go to Active Goto Screen  Curser down to the under the Mark Number  Press enter quickly  Then press Waypoints.  The waypoint that is active will show  Press enter again and the full screen will show

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests  When you have the Mark displayed Curser down to the GPS reference points. Quickly hit Enter again. This will highlight S (South). Move Curser to the right until out get to the number you want to change. Move Curser up or down to change each number.  Once the S reference points are correct keep moving the Cursor to the right and it will move down one line to the E (East) reference points. Again move across to numbers that you want to change.  Hit enter again quickly. This will complete the changes.

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests  Be careful not to change S or E otherwise you will find you are suddenly 3,000 nautical miles from the Mark (Northern Hemisphere).   You have now entered the reference point you are working to.  Distance & Bearing  Now hit Page again until you will get a screen that has 2 data boxes.  There is many data items we have in this screen but we want Distn to Next & Bearing 

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests Yachting WAPerth 2011

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests We want the Distance and Bearing. The distance and bearing back to our reference point – back to (Mark 4 - Start Boat) Yachting WAPerth 2011

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests  Mark 1 just has to take make the distance and bearing as advised by the Race Office. Remember the Race Office is giving his bearing looking up the race course and you bearing is giving the bearing back to the start boat.  MOB example  You therefore must read your GPS bearing adjusting by 180o   Mark 2 & 3: There are GPS reference sheets that give you the distance and bearings back to Mark 4 Start Boat.   Mark 4 Gate As per the Race Officers instructions

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests  Before I go on the water I clear out all reference points.   In any Page Screen press Menu twice  Go to Points press Enter quickly  Press Menu  Go to Delete All  It will ask you if you want to delete all Waypoints – Yes – Enter quickly   If you Page back to the Active Goto screen there should be no points listed.  This will give you the basics and as time goes by you will quickly learn the other many features of the GPS.

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests  Remember – the MLU Moto  We can lay anything!   Selwyn Castles  President  Mark Layers Union Yachting WAPerth 2011
