Colonizatio n By the late 1400’s Europeans were looking for a western passage to the trade markets in Asia. As a result, the continents of North and South America will be “discovered”.

In 1607, Jamestown became the first permanent English colony in North America. The colony faced many hardships before becoming profitable for the colonists and investors.

In 1614, John Rolfe began to successfully harvest tobacco. This will eventually become Jamestown’s most prosperous export.

To try and encourage more skilled craftsman to settle in Jamestown the House of Burgesses was created in The House of Burgesses will give the colonists a small amount of self-government.

The success of tobacco will lead to the expansion of this crop as well as other cash crops throughout the Southern colonies. Along with this came the importation of African slaves.

Activity Write down the following questions on a separate sheet of paper: 1.What colonies produce tobacco? 2.What export did many of the colonies have in common? Which colonies exported this product? 3.What do the Southern colonies need in order to export their goods and why is it a problem that they do not produce it? (Explain in a paragraph)
