-Written Response- Are men and women considered equal today? Why or why not?

-Women vs. Men- In the early to mid – nineteenth century, ideals in America suggested that a woman’s place was in the private domain of the home, where she should carry out her prescribed roles of wife and mother. Men, on the other hand, would rule the public domain through work, politics, and economics.

What is feminism? What does it mean to say, “I am..” or “she is a feminist?” What is feminism?

What is feminism? Describes a political, cultural or economic movement aimed at establishing equal rights and legal protection for women.

What does Woman’s Suffrage Mean? How do you define this movement? What did it fight for?

What does Woman’s Suffrage Mean? Women's suffrage is the right of women to vote and historically includes the economic and political reform movement

Setting: Victorian Era A woman’s role = wife and mother Women could not vote or own property Feminist movement The Feminist movement had just begun as a radical, fringe ideology, largely dismissed by the mainstream. Women could not live on their own; their husbands or fathers served as their guardians Late 1880’s Late 1880’s Women were to be “pure, pious, domestic and submissive.” Queen Victoria

Victorian Women: Queen Victoria herself said Queen Victoria herself said : "I am most anxious to enlist everyone who can speak or write to join in checking this mad, wicked folly of 'Women's Rights', with all its attendant horrors, on which her poor feeble sex is bent, forgetting every sense of womanly feelings and propriety. Feminists ought to get a good whipping. Were woman to 'unsex' themselves by claiming equality with men, they would become the most hateful, heathen and disgusting of beings and would surely perish without male protection."

-Women’s Rights- or NOT Rights! Women were not allowed to vote Husbands had legal power over and responsibility for their wives, to the extent that they could imprison or beat them Most occupations were closed to women, and when women did work they were paid only a fraction of what men earned Women were not allowed to enter professions such as medicine or law Women had no means to gain education, since no college or university would accept female students Women were robbed of self-confidence and self-respect, and were made totally dependent on men

Some were in favor of equal rights and used cartoons like this to make their point clear.

Society used advertising to show women that their place was in the home. JournalELA 9 After carefully viewing the advertisement, explain the message that the add sends to the reader. What does this tell us about the mind-set of this time period in American History? Explain your answer buy supporting your thoughts with facts & information from yesterday’s Cornell Notes…

“The New Woman” By the end of the 1800s, feminists were gaining momentum in favor of change s women pushed for broader roles outside their home- roles that could draw on women’s intelligence and non-domestic talents This change was not met without backlash from society

The Women’s Suffrage Movement Women’s Suffrage is the right of women to vote. August 26,1920 Three quarters of the state legislatures ratify the Nineteenth Amendment. American Women win full voting rights.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman: Not a ‘typical’ Victorian lady Gilman believed in women’s rights Her own experiences were similar to those of the YWP narrator Gilman believed that women must exercise their intellect or go mad The story, YWP, was set in the Victorian era, and the story’s theme was contrary to the established beliefs of the period.

-Charlotte Perkins Gilman- She was born in Connecticut into a poverty stricken home where she grew up with only her mother after her parents divorced Mother taught her not to expect emotional support Gilman paid for room and board while living at home – worked as a teacher and artist to make $ Spent life writing and lecturing about the importance of the economic independence of women Battled between marriage and work and the roles she “needed” to fill

-Charlotte Perkins Gilman- She suffered from postpartum depression after her daughter was born – lasted for 4 yrs. Doctors prescribed “rest cure” – forbidden to sit up, sew, write, or read She later disregarded the doctors and left her husband on a quest to rethink attitudes and assumptions about women in society

The Rest Cure This cure was advocated strongly by nationally recognized neurologist of the time, Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell. His Rest Cure called for complete rest, coerced feeding and isolation.

The Rest Cure – for Hysteria The treatment required for the cure of Hysteria involved a number of steps: “1) extended and total bed rest; 2) isolation from family and familiar surroundings; 3) overfeeding, especially with cream, on the assumption that increased body volume created new energy;

Hysteria cont’d In the Victorian era, women were discouraged from work and over-stimulation Hysteria’s nature was questionable, and many believed women faked illness to gain attention. The Rest Cure was both a treatment and a punishment. Most women disliked being placed on rest, and were unlikely to become “hysterical” again.

The Yellow Wallpaper Woman’s Suffrage & Woman’s Rights Background (Notes) Essential Question: What is woman’s suffrage and how did the attitudes towards woman during this era impact the role of females in society? Left Side ?’s 1- Define Woman’s Suffrage 2- How did society react if a female spoke out against the normal views of female roles in society? 3- What are some characteristics of the Victorian Era? 4- What are 2 things that give a little insight into what TYP will be about?

Examples: Feminist Critics Quotes/Comments "The Yellow Wallpaper" Feminist Criticism Yellow-Wallpaper-Feminist-Criticism/ In describing the relationship between the narrator & her husband the reader can surmise that, “ John is a textbook example of a dominating spouse, a husband who holds absolute control over his wife. He treats her as an inferior, as seen here: “John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage” (1). John sees his wife’s ideas and thoughts as laughable, never taking them seriously until it is too late to save her from madness.” On Feminism and ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ by Charlotte Gilman “The Yellow Wallpaper is a feminist text, telling a story about a woman’s struggles against male-centric thinking and societal ‘norms”

Examples: Feminist Critics Quotes/Comments Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”: A Feminist Reading After learning of her husbands death, Mrs. Mallard understand that as a Victorian woman“…She must not make her “joy” known under any circumstances. Conscious of her social duty as a widow to grieve for a year, Louise will at least “weep again when she” beholds his corpse. Nevertheless, she manifests her joy publicly––“there was a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory”––and is therefore punished” Feminist Analysis: “The Story of an Hour” Following the news about her husband’s fatal accident, “Mrs. Mallard goes on to realize how much she really didn’t love her husband. She doesn’t feel the need to have guilt over it since he is already gone. She finally breaks away from the role forced onto her as the perfect wife and can begin to stop holding herself back. This can show the reader that a woman at this time might not even be aware of just how much of herself she has to hold back when married.”
