Introduction In the mountains of Mongolia nomadic herders, snow leopard and livestock live together (even into the protected areas) They are so beautiful, elusive, but endangered animals (How many of us in the world?, how many sheep? And HOW MNAY OF THEM?)

The Mongolian snow leopard (Panthera uncia) population is 2 nd largest in the world. Connects populations in Russia and Mongolia. Siberian ibex inhabits these areas as well as other ungulates – the snow leopard’s main prey. These habitats have been used for livestock pasture for thousands of years 4.5 tons of cashmere, provides herders of 21 provinces with about 205 million USD each year; 1/3 of this cashmere is collected in areas with snow leopards.

Status & Threats They are about 1000 snow leopards in Mongolia Included in the Red list of Mongolia Protected as a very rare by Law of fauna Prey Reduction due to Competition with Livestock for pasture land and open water sources Poaching Retribution killing for depredation of livestock Fragmentation of habitat due to mining and infrastructure development

National Goal Have a stable population Increase the number of snow leopards (females with 3 cubs) Decrease pasture overlap of Mountain ungulates and livestock

Key Actions Capacity of Local communities, Implement community- based conservation programs to reduce poaching, depredation, livestock losses, Decrease livestock wild ungulates pasture overlap, implement awareness, outreach programs Expand state protected areas network Improve capacity of local protected areas Expand transboundary protected areas Improve conservation in areas outside of protected areas Establish and support community-local authority managed, community- local authority-private enterprises managed local protected areas, Improve law enforcement Awareness and education
