The RNLI The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) save lives at sea. They provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service.

The RNLI in 2012 In 2012… RNLI lifeboats: –Launched 8,321 times – an average of 23 times per day –Rescued 7,912 people – an average of 22 per day. RNLI Lifeguards: –Responded to 14,519 incidents. –Assisted 16,414 people.

Our values The RNLI provide a crucial service to everyone that uses the sea, whether fishermen or swimmers. Their work is based on 4 key values: –Selfless –Dependable –Trustworthy –Courageous

Our equipment In order to provide the best service possible the RNLI need to provide their crews with the most up to date equipment available. This can be the fastest and safest lifeboats available or specialist lifesaving equipment.

Our equipment For example the new Shannon Class lifeboat will have self righting technology, meaning it can turn itself the right way up should it capsize. It also has a special Systems and Information Management System which means crew members can operate the equipment from the safety of their seats in treacherous weather. But the high-tech equipment that the RNLI use every day can be very expensive.

How we are funded Unlike the other emergency services, the RNLI is not funded by the government. It relies on voluntary donations and legacies to continue saving lives. The RNLI requires roughly £160 million per year to maintain their high standards and continue to save lives on the sea.
