Mr. Hamilton Nelsen Middle School Tech. Ed. Teacher CAD and 3D Printing Workshop
OnShape (3D modeling) day 1 Cura (Translator/Slicer) day 2 AirWolf (3D printer) day 2
What is CAD? CAD stands for Computer Aided Design With a CAD software, you can draw 3-Dimensional Objects There are many different CAD software. We will use OnShape.
What is 3D Printing? 3D printers use specifically formatted 3D CAD files A printer takes that file and creates it by melting a long plastic cord The printer then takes the molten plastic and stacks layers upon layers of this to create a 3-dimensional plastic part
What will I be doing? Idea ----> Part -----> Translate -----> 3D Print -----> Robot
What else is CAD used for? Besides 3D Printing, CAD is also used for: Virtually prototyping mechanisms; making sure parts fit together within Creating a virtual version of a fabricated part Creating blueprints of parts and assemblies
Let’s get started with OnShape. Go to the following website: class class Click on “Robotics Summer Camp Links” Click on “OnShape” Go to “create account” or “sign in” if you’ve already created one in my class. Use your own personal or you can use this: Login: Password: RobotsAreFun#1
Let’s get started with OnShape. Let’s watch some videos together: OnShape Introduction Software Overview and User Interface Tour YouTube Intro video My “most common” tools overview 3 Robots Parts Challenge Begin OnShape video tutorials, exercises, and quizzes

Let’s get started with Thingiverse (.stl files) What’s an.stl file? Let’s explore Thingiverse to get our.stl file
Let’s get started with Cura (.gcode files) What does Cura do? Let’s setup Cura on our computers so we can use it to convert our.stl file to a.gcode file to 3-d print Use the following links to setup Cura on your computer Let’s manipulate our object in Cura before printing Save the.gcode to your SD card
Let’s get started with Airwolf (3-d printer) Introduce and explain parts Demonstrate proper steps for cleaning and preparing the build plate for a print Demonstrate user interface functions Start a print from Thingiverse
