TOPIC: Chapter 1, Section 2 Roman Problems

Sub topic #1 (left side of paper) What was the geography of Rome at its height? Notes (right side of paper) The center of the Roman Empire was the city of Rome (in Italy today) Rome extended east to Turkey, Syria and Israel Rome extended west to the end of the continent Rome extended north to the Rhine river and south to the top of Africa.

Sub topic #2 (left side of paper) What were the factors that threatened Rome’s size? Notes (right side of paper) Germanic Tribes: tribes that lived along the northern borders of the Roman empire Territory (land owned by a country) was slowly lost to these groups because of wars Rome could not supply enough army to protect all of Rome In the East Persian armies were taking territory

Sub topic #2 (left side of paper) What were the factors that threatened Rome’s size? Notes (right side of paper) - Rome was not able to protect its borders because of its internal weaknesses

Sub topic #3 (left side of paper) What were Rome’s internal weaknesses? Notes (right side of paper) Dishonest government officials Famine: not enough food for people and disease Income and wages fall Wealthy stop paying taxes Violence and crime increase

Rome was split into two empires: -Western Roman Empire -Eastern Roman Empire The Huns came to the northern parts of Europe and drove the Germanic people into Rome

Notes (right side of paper) Germanic people were mistreated by the Romans and fighting broke out The Visigoths rebelled against the Romans and in 410 Alaric (a Visigoth leader) captured Rome and looted the treasury Finally another leader named Odoacer overthrew the 14 year old emperor and Rome was finished
